This guided storytelling walk explores the ‘unmapped’ place names of the Cairngorms and the stories behind them.
The first event in the 2026 Badenoch Heritage Festival (opens in new tab) is a guided walk in partnership with Sarah Hobbs of Strathspey Storywalks.(opens in new tab)
This walk will focus on the people and place names in Badenoch, past and present.
The ‘Unmapped Places’ project is a community archive of living, breathing Cairngorms placenames, in regular use by many different individuals or groups but which haven’t necessarily been mapped before. Over 300 names and stories collected so far highlight the many relationships we have with the hills , especially as the climate and land use shift.
The project is funded by RSE and Feisean nan Gaidheal, with additional funding from TRACS/Andy Hunter Storytelling Bursary.
